The Mechanism Behind Your Car's Braking Power

Many of today’s cars have disc brakes in the front and drum brakes behind. Brakes rely on friction to slow down or to stop a moving vehicle, which is supplied either by a brake pad or a brake shoe. To stop the wheels, calipers on the disc brakes are affixed with pads to grab the spinning disc.

A drum brake, on the other hand, has a wheel cylinder that pushes the brake shoe against the inside of a spinning drum. And while some braking sounds are normal, chirps, continuous squeals and grinding sounds mean that it’s time to get the brake pads or shoes replaced.

Anytime you notice something irregular about your brakes, it’s a good idea to have them inspected by a brake systems specialist. For information on keeping your car's brakes in good condition, please check your vehicle's owner’s manual. Doing this can help you avoid expensive repairs and unforeseen brake failure.
